The BACB has certification and training requirements covered in the Rethink’s RBT Training that are based on the RBT Task List. There have been updates to Rethink’s training based on the RBT Task List 2nd Edition.

In the December 2018 newsletter : BACB December 2018 Newsletter, the BACB informed us that there will be updates to the task list that go into effect on November 1st, 2019. Rethink has been hard at work updating the RBT training and guided notes on our website.

*One significant change to the duration of the RBT training requirement is that the duration of the RBT training must be at least 5 days but no more than 180 days. This is a new requirement that all staff members should be aware of.

The following modules have changes made to them to reflect the RBT Task List 2nd Edition Updates:

o The Registered Behavior Technician Training & Credential

o Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders

o Reinforcement

o Stimulus Control and Prompt Fading

o Function and Assessment of Problem Behaviors

o Assisting with Training Care Providers (removal of this training module)

o Ethical and Professional Behavior Part 1

*Since there was a module removed from the Rethink RBT training, there are now 26 modules instead of 27 training modules.

*The RBT certificate is updated with 2nd edition task list documentation.

*All modules with updates, include guided notes with updates as well.

RBT Training Update FAQs:

1. Do I need to complete the modules if I have submitted my application and it has been approved prior to November 1, 2019?

Applications received prior to November 1, 2019 may include documentation from the 1st or 2nd edition RBT Task List and have completed the RBT Training in at least 5 days but not more than 180 days. It is not a requirement to update the modules that have updates, but it is recommended to review these changes.

2.· Do I need to complete the updated modules if I am submitting my application on November 1, 2019 or later?

Applications received on or after November 1, 2019 must include documentation from the 2nd edition RBT Task List with the plan to take the exam after November 1st and have completed the RBT training in at least 5 days but not more than 180 days. Applicants who have completed the training prior to November 1st but are not planning to submit the application until after November 1st will need to retake the updated modules. Applicants do not need to retake the full training, only the updated modules.

3. What is needed if I submit my application prior to November 1st but do not receive approval from the BACB before November 1st, 2019?

If staff have submitted their 40 hour certificate to BACB, the BACB must approve their application prior to November 1, 2019. Otherwise, if their application is not approved by November 1st, their 40 hour training will no longer be valid and they would need to complete a new 40 hour training based on the 2nd edition before they could apply. In other words, they would have to take all modules again, and the start date on the certificate will need to be reset.

4. If staff have started the RBT training in Rethink and are in the 5-180 day duration requirement, what is needed to ensure that they are meeting the BACB’s requirements?

Applicants who have completed a portion of Rethink’s training prior to November 1st will complete the remainder of the modules in the training. Their certificate will state RBT Task List 2nd edition. If they have completed the updated modules, prior to our update, they should retake those modules and be sure to meet the requirement of completing the training between 5 and 180 days.

5.What are the requirements for taking the RBT exam if staff members completed the training based on the RBT task list 1st edition?

If staff members had their application approved prior to Nov 1, 2019, they will have 1 year to take the RBT exam. However, they should just keep in mind that if they do not pass the exam by November, the exam will begin to reflect 2nd edition content starting November 1st. As such, we recommend that they review the affected modules.

6. If staff members have exceeded the 180 day requirement what is recommended in order to complete the training in Rethink?

If staff have exceeded the 180 day required requirement, it recommended to reset all training modules and complete these again with the updated modules (2nd edition task list updates). To reset all training modules to ensure that start and end dates meet the 5-180 day requirement, please reach out to support@rethinkbh.com.
