Rethink's RBT Training Update (Task List 2nd Ed): An Overview and FAQs
Rethink’s Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Training is based on the certification and training requirements determined by the Behavior Analysts Certification Board (BACB). These requirements are listed on BACB’s RBT Task List.
In the December 2018 newsletter : BACB December 2018 Newsletter, the BACB announced that it had created an updated RBT Task List (2nd edition) that will go into effect on November 1st, 2019. As such, on (insert date) Rethink updated their training modules (videos, training notes, quiz and test questions) and documentation so as to be compliant with the updated certification and training requirements on the RBT Task List (2nd edition).
In addition: One significant change to the duration of the RBT training requirement is that the duration of the RBT training must be at least 5 days but no more than 180 days. This is a new requirement that all staff members should be aware of.
A summary of the updates that Rethink has made to its training modules can be found below.
The following modules have been updated to reflect the requirements listed on RBT Task List (2nd Edition):
o The Registered Behavior Technician Training & Credential

* The RBT certificate is updated with information stating that the training is based on RBT Task List 2nd edition.
The following content areas, as prescribed by the BACB, are included in the training.
1. Collect ABC data
2. Implement shaping procedures
3. Implement token economy procedures
4. Maintain client dignity
5. Maintain professional boundaries
6. Be familiar with the BACB’s RBT supervision requirements
7. Seek clinical direction from a supervisor
The content also meets the 3-hour ethics and 1- hour RBT supervision requirement.
The following tasks have been removed:
1. Implement stimulus fading procedures
2. Assist with functional assessment
3. Assist with training of stakeholders
In addition, the task “To comply with applicable legal, regulatory, and workplace reporting requirements” has been subsumed under the new RBT ethics code.
RBT Training Update FAQs
1. Do I need to redo the full RBT training (all 26 modules) if I have submitted my application and it has been approved prior to November 1, 2019?
Applications received and approved prior to November 1, 2019 may include documentation from the 1st or 2nd edition RBT Task List. It is not a requirement to retake the modules that have been updated, but it is recommended to review these changes because your exam will include content from the 2nd edition task list.
2. What is needed if I submit my application prior to November 1st but do not receive approval from the BACB before November 1st, 2019?
If the applicant has submitted their 40-hour certificate to BACB, the BACB must approve their application prior to November 1, 2019. Otherwise, if their application has not been approved by November 1st, their 40-hour training will no longer be valid, and they would need to complete a new 40 hour training based on the 2nd edition before they can reapply. In other words, they would have to take all training modules again. Before retaking the modules, the applicant would need to inform Rethink so we can reset their modules to reflect their new training start and end dates.
3. If staff have started the RBT training in Rethink and are within the 5 to 180-day duration requirement, what is needed to ensure that they are meeting the BACB’s requirements?
Applicants who have started a portion of Rethink’s training prior to November 1st 2019 can complete the remainder of the modules in the training. Their certificate will state RBT Task List 2nd edition. If they have completed the updated modules, prior to October 15, 2019, it is recommended that they retake those modules and be sure to meet the requirement of completing the training between 5 and 180 days.
4.What are the requirements for taking the RBT exam if staff members completed the training based on the RBT task list 1st edition (i.e. prior to October 15, 2019)
If staff members had their application approved prior to Nov 1, 2019, they will have 1 year to take the RBT exam. However, they should just keep in mind that if they do not pass the exam by November 1, 2019, the exam will reflect content from RBT Task List (2nd edition). As such, we recommend that they review the updated training modules.
-If you sit for the exam prior to November 1st the Exam will reflect the RBT Task List 1st Edition
-If you sit for the exam on or after November 1st the Exam will reflect the RBT Task List 2nd Edition
5. If you have exceeded the 180-day requirement what is recommended in order to complete the training in Rethink?
