**Tara will be adding to the SEL assessments that are covered in this spreadsheet.
User Story
As a teacher user, I need to see a full picture of the student’s academic performance in SEL so that I can provide the student with appropriate tools and intervention plans to help them reach their potential in this content area.
UI
The user will see tabs for ELA, Math, Behavior, SEL, and Attendance
The user clicks the SEL tab.
Selecting a previous year
To select a previous year, the user clicks on the year drop down and clicks on boxes for their selection.
Selecting part of a year
To view part of the school year, user clicks selects/deselects from the default setting.
Acceptance Criteria
Given a student is in the following grades, then we will hide the SEL Tab:
Grade 2
Grade 1
Kindergarten
Pre-K
Given user has made a change to Define school settings, then the drop down will contain those time periods.
Default is for quarters. (See image: Default Example)
Given an assessment has occurred during a particular quarter, we will show that quarter under the Quarter column:
Quarter 1 = Q1
Quarter 2 = Q2
Quarter 3 = Q3
Quarter 4 = Q4
We will only show the quarter in which the assessment start date occurred in the Quarter column.
The Key for the graph will display the total score ranges for the Grade Band that the student belongs to. sel_tier_category_score_to_tier_mapping.xlsx
Given a user selects a different label for the time period in the Define School Year settings, that label will replace Quarter in the table header.
We have a prototype of an onboarding form that each customer will fill out before we integrate their data for the MTSS product. The form will allow them to choose how they want to report out time of year (with options for semester, trimester, quarter, and season; see Define School Year Settings ).
Given the Self-Assessment is administered two times in the year, the self-assessment will show in the time periods that are defined in settings only.
There will be time periods that do not have data for the self-assessment
If there is no data for the self-assessment in the defined time period, the time period will not be shown.
The most recent self-assessment will continue to be shown until the next assessment is taken in the school year.
The periods of time for the school year will be defined by the customer selections for the Define School Year Settings Time Period field.
Time periods will come from how the customer fills out Define School Year Settings. This includes:
Number of time periods in school year (e.g., 2 time periods if the customer selects semesters, 3 time periods if the customer selects trimester, etc.).
The start and end dates for the time periods selected.
The start and end dates for the school year.
The start of the first period of the year will be the date recorded in Define School Year Settings Start of School Year field. The end of the first period will be the date recorded in Define School Year Settings
The start date of the Fall SEL Self-Assessment will determine which time period it will be viewed in based on the Define School Year Settings.
If the Start date of the assessment is within the Quarter 1 time period, the assessment data will show in Quarter 1 only.
The Spring SEL Self-Assessment start date will determine which time period it will be viewed in based on the Define School Year Settings.
Follow same rules for top section containing the student demographics, Academic Needs, Other Details and the Year Selector drop down explained in Overview.
We will use Student Self-Assessment to determine Tier Levels. See: SEL | Cut Scores | Settings | MTSS Report.
Given a self assessment is assigned but not completed, the self assessment will show on the student SEL table in the SEL tab.
We will show assessment name
Intervention Plan button (If applicable) or None
The date, tier recommendation, and scores will show as an empty state (--) until the assessment is taken.
Changing Years
This brings us back to Jrich: Start New School Year for MTSS Products.
The drop down will default to show only the current school year.
The bar graph will show a bar for each assessment taken by a student in the selected time period defined by the dropdown menu selection.
Given the student has taken the Self-Assessment in more than one school year, then we will show the SEASON YEAR in the assessment table column for the selected time periods (example: Q1, Q4) in the time period column.
The dropdown school year selection will be shown in chronological order with the current school year (most recent school year) at the top.
Given user has selected the box containing the school year, then all Quarter checkboxes will be selected.
Given user has checked specific Quarters that are from different school years, then we will show those selections in the graph and in the table chart below.
User Story
As a teacher or admin user, I need to see the student’s score within each categories for SEL so that I will know the areas where the student has the most need when creating an intervention plan.

Intervention Buttons are included on Star Early Literacy (SEL), Star Reading, Star Math, Behavior, SEL.
Given user has clicked on an intervention plan button, they will be taken to view the intervention plan.
8 Tier Button variations include:
T2 Plan Pre-Planning (yellow)
T2 Plan In Progress (yellow)
T2 Plan Archived (yellow)
T2 Plan Mastered (green)
T3 Plan-Pre Planning (red)
T3 Plan In -Progress (red)
T3 Plan -Archived (red)
T3 Plan- Mastered (green)
A plan that has the status of In Progress will be the priority to show to the user
Given the there is a Plan in Pre-Planning and a Plan In Progress for the student, we will show the In-Progress Plan button for the specified tier level.
Given a student has the same intervention plan in the same status (Pre Planning, In Progress, Mastered, Archived) that extends into another testing window, then we show the same button twice-once in the previous testing season and once in the current testing season.
Given the user changes the status of the plan within the current testing season, we will update the button to reflect the change thus showing only one button with the most current updated status.
Given there is no intervention plan in place when an assessment is integrated and a user creates an intervention plan before the next assessment is integrated, the plan created will show in the Plan column even if it was after the dates.
The intervention plan will show in two rows if no other intervention plan is created when the next assessment is integrated.
The appearance and updates of the Intervention Plan Tier Buttons follows the dates included in the intervention plan and the dates in the Define School Year settings.
We only show one Intervention Plan Tier Button
If there is an update to the intervention plan, the intervention plan button is updated (T2 Pre-planning can be replaced with T2 In-Progress) for changes made during the specific date ranges.
Given the date range/time period has passed, then the button in shown in it’s final variation for that time period.
Only one Intervention Plan Tier button will be shown at a time for each given subject area.
Given there are multiple plans in different statuses, the most recent Intervention Plan will be shown according to the date.
If there is an Archived plan and a user begins a new plan that is in Pre-Planning, the Pre-Planning Intervention Plan will be shown instead on the table.
If there is an In-Progress Plan, this plan will be shown by default.
Intervention Plan Buttons
User Story
As an educator viewing the student’s SEL tab, I need to see the intervention plans that have been in place or if there is no intervention plan in place so that I will know if we have addressed the student’s needs.

Acceptance Criteria
See also: ELA | Student View | MTSS Dashboard Report for information about Viewing an Intervention Plan and 8 Tier Button variations.
Intervention Plan buttons change as they are updated by the user in Create/Edit Plans | View Plans | Classroom | Intervention Tracking.
Follow Define School Year Settings for range of dates indicating the start and stop of a school year.
Given no intervention plan has been created for the student during the school year, then the value under the Plan will read: None.
Jrich: Start New School Year: What becomes of intervention plans that were created at the end of the school year for the next school year? Should we rethink what Archived means for these? Right now users cannot un-archive an intervention plan and use it again. Other tools can be un-archived and used again.
Given user has selected Tier 2 or Tier 3 for the SEL plan in Create/Edit Plans | View Plans | Classroom | Intervention Tracking, then the button will show either Tier 2 or Tier 3.
Given the user has changed the status of the Intervention Plan in Create/Edit Plans | View Plans | Classroom | Intervention Tracking, the button will reflect the updates.
Examples: Tier 2: Pre-planning, Tier 2: In-Progress, Tier 2: Archived, Tier 2: Mastered.
Examples: Tier 3: Pre-Planning, Tier 3: In-Progress, Tier 3: Archived, Tier 3: Mastered.
Given user has an existing In-Progress Intervention Plan at the same time they have a Pre-planning Intervention Plan, then we will show the In-Progress Intervention Plan button.
Given user clicks on the Intervention Plan button, then they are taken to view the Intervention Plan. (See image: View Intervention)
Given the user clicks the Intervention Plan button to view the Intervention Plan and wants to navigate back to the MTSS Student Dashboard screen, they will click the back navigation arrow in the top left corner to return to the previous screen.
Tier Notices
User Story
As an educator who is creating and managing many student’s SEL Intervention Plans, I need a notice telling me when a student’s test score indicates that they are not a Tier 1 so that I can focus my attention on the students who are most in need of an intervention.
UI
User sees Tier notice when the SEL tab is clicked.
To create an intervention plan, the user clicks on Take Action button within the Tier Notice.
User is taken to the Create Intervention Plan screen with the Social Tab selected.
Acceptance Criteria
General
Only one Tier Notice can be shown at a time.
If there is more than one Tier Notice, there will be an arrow in the bottom right corner of the Tier Notice to switch to the next Tier Notice.
Given the user is viewing the SEL tab, only Tier Notices for SEL will show above the graph.
Appearance of Tier Notices--Think about the statuses--what can user bring back? They can’t bring back Mastered…or Archived?
Given the student’s score on the Fall and/or Spring assessment falls within the Tier 2 range and the student DOES NOT have an intervention plan (Tier 2 or Tier 3) in the Pre-Planning or In-Progress statuses, then the Tier 2 Notice will show.
Given the student score on the Fall and/or Spring assessment falls within the Tier 3 range and the student DOES NOT have an intervention plan (Tier 2 or Tier 3) in the Pre-Planning or In-Progress statuses, then the Tier 3 Notice will show.
See image: Tier 3 Notice for an example.
Plan Status Column
Tier Notices will show for Plan Statuses:
None (shown when no Tier Plan has been created)
Archived
Mastered
Given a user has Archived or Mastered an MTSS Intervention Plan in the current season and the student is recommended for Tier 2 or Tier 3 based on the most recent assessment scores, the Tier Notice will reappear to show again.
Given a Tier Notice shows and there is an Archived or Mastered MTSS Intervention Plan, the user can review by clicking on the Plan Intervention button or start a new intervention by clicking Take Action on the Tier Notice.
Tier Notices will not be shown for Plan Statuses:
Pre-Planning
In-Progress
Operation of Tier Notices
Given Take Action button is clicked from any of the Tier Notices (Tier 2 or Tier 3), then we show the create intervention plan with the Social Tab Selected. (See image: Create Intervention)
Given Take Action is not selected, then the Tier Notice (Tier 2 or Tier 3) remains.
Given the user clicks the Take Action button to create an Intervention Plan and wants to navigate back to the MTSS Student Dashboard screen, they will click the back navigation arrow in the top left corner to return to the previous screen.
Given a user enters information in the new MTSS Intervention Plan and clicks the Save button, the new Pre-Planning or In-Progress MTSS Intervention Plan will show in the Student Dashboard as an Intervention button when the user returns to the screen.
The Tier Notice for SEL is removed in Student Dashboard with these changes.
Removal of Tier Notices
Tier Notices are for the current school year only.
Given user clicks Take Action and an Intervention Plan is created (Statuses: Pre-Planning or In-Progress), then the Tier Notice is removed.
Given no user clicks on Take action and DOES NOT create an Intervention Plan (Statuses: Pre-Planning or In-Progress), then the Tier notice IS NOT removed.
Given user clicks Take Action and an Intervention Plan is created (Statuses: Pre-Planning or In-progress) when there is an intervention in place with the statuses of (Archived or Mastered), then the newly created plan replaces the old archived or mastered plan. (See section above for Intervention Plans)
At Risk and Approaching Indicators
User Story
As a teacher or admin user, I need to quickly see if a student’s score is At Risk of dropping to a more intensive tier or if they are Approaching a less intensive tier so that I know which students can benefit from an intervention plan the most.
UI
Tier selections occur in Settings. See image below from Settings to illustrate example of how Risk and Approaching indicator work.
User sees the At Risk icon in the chart below.
User sees the Approaching indicator in the chart below.
Acceptance Criteria

Grades 3-5
Grades 6-8
Grades 9-12
Self-Assessment Scores to Tiers: sel_tier_category_score_to_tier_mapping.xlsx
At Risk Icons
Tier 1 At Risk icon shows when the total score is within 2 percent of the tier cutoff.
Tier 2 At Risk icon shows when the total score is within 2 points of the tier cutoff.
At Risk icon and Tier Notices can show at the same time.
Given a student scored within 2% of the Tier 1 cut off then we will show both the Tier 2 Notice and the At Risk icon
Given a student scored within 2% of the Tier 2 cut off then we will show both the Tier 3 Notice and the At Risk icon
At Risk icons show for each specific assessment that the student takes for which they are in the At Risk score ranges.
At Risk icons remain in the table chart for the given assessment.
At Risk icons will only show in the next student assessment if the student score is in the At Risk score range.
