For sake of simplicity: notifications = alerts
Must segment types of alerts based on attention level
High attention: errors, confirmations, major updates
Medium attention: recommendations, warnings
Low attention: badges, status indications
Must find balance between sending the right amount of relevant alerts to users
Ideally give users ability to enable/disable certain types of alerts
Notifications must not be intrusive
Create style guide to specify style, character limit, etc.
Always show less alerts than necessary
Consolidate all alerts into one Settings page: email, text, in-app, push
Examples:
Nav dropdown
Consider categorizing alerts and showing # of unread (and only show unread)
If no unread notifications, then show “no new notifications” text

Consider showing # of alerts for unread, but not for All
